Downham church is on a hill overlooking Essex, with fields all round. It was a beautiful bright sunny day when we visited it on 13th August 2017, and a christening was just finishing. Because of this we didn’t go inside, as there were still lots of people around and inside the church enjoying their celebrations.
It has a sturdy red-brick tower with navy diapering.
This sweet little church with its wooden spire is situated right on the busy road to Maldon, with heavy fast traffic whizzing past. There is virtually nowhere to park other than on the grass verges, I don’t know how the regular congregation manages it. There is a fine large house next door to the church, Woodham Mortimer Hall.
We visited it on a very hot June 18th 2017 but didn’t go in because there was a service in progress. The day was mostly very sunny but it was overcast when I took these photos, so they have a rather strange flatness to them!
