Foulness – St Mary the Virgin

I walked round the outside of this decommissioned church on the 1st August 2010. The church was locked up. Soon after this it was declared unsafe and scaffolding erected around it. In 2016 part of it was put up for sale with planning permission to create a swanky apartment inside. I don’t know if it sold, or what happened after that.

Foulness Island is owned by the Ministry of Defence, and you need a permit to go onto the island. There are some farms, a few houses, this empty church and a closed down pub. My photos were taken on an Open Day – they are held a few times a year, and you have to go through a checkpoint, get issued with your permit, and stick only to the main road through to the village itself.
